INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY 2K22-23
Updated: Feb 21

“The celebration of International Mother Language Day serves as a reminder to all of us that there is something special about mother language that makes it so wonderful.”

The International Mother language Day commemorates the students killed during a protest in Bangladesh that happened on February 21, 1952. They were part of the group that was campaigning for the official use of Bengali as their mother language. Let us also understand the importance of International mother language day. The importance of the mother language day cannot be denied and here are some of the reasons. It helps in the intellectual development of children. The communication with own culture is better. It boosts confidence. This day is a worldwide annual observance held on 21st February to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote multilingualism. The theme of the programme this year was ‘Using technology for multilingual learning”.

In Shree H. J. Gajera English Medium, Primary Section we celebrated this day with a competition organized specifically to promote this day. Our learners of grade 1st to 4th spoke in various languages which included Kathiyawadi, Bengali, Marathi, Hariyanvi, Punjabi, Marvadi, Bhojpuri, Sanskrit and many more and dressed up accordingly.

The programme was a success where it begun with a singing performance which included acoustics. The judgment was based on the body language, the delivery of speech in correct accent as well as the way the participants dressed up for the competition. Language is a powerful tool that opens the gateways of understanding for our own and other cultures. Mother tongue is vital in framing the thinking and emotions of people. Learning to speak in the mother tongue is very necessary for a child's comprehensive development.
“Language may be merely a means of communication, but mother tongue is something that binds us to our culture.”
